RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Objective
The post holder will have an interest in haemato-oncology and general consultative haematology. Some cover for transplant unit. This is a new appointment as locum post in the first instance to join the 8 consultants in the department and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching within the department and where appropriate to further develop the clinical services in haematology either malignant or non-malignant areas to compliment the interests of the current Consultant body.
The Trust is committed to supporting CPD and Teaching and will provide time and funding for these sessions.

Introduction
NHS Trust is a 550 bed busy district hospital which provides a full range of acute care services to a population of 430,000 in North Birmingham and South East Staffordshire. There are visiting renal physicians, neurologists and rheumatologists and four oncologists.
Recent Trust Developments
The Hospital has a refurbished (1999) accident and emergency department and a surgical day case facility. In 1996 and 1997 the chemotherapy units for haematology and oncology were opened. The Trust was awarded beacon status for waiting list initiative and cancer services in 1999. The Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (ÂŁ13M capital spend) was opened in 2005, with facilities for rapid diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical and surgical disorders.
There is an active education centre with full multimedia facilities and a variety of lecture and seminar rooms with good library and computer search facilities and internet access.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service
To help expand the Clinical Haematology service within the Trust.
To provide continued clinical responsibility for the patients under his/her care in conjunction with colleagues.
To undertake general haematological and specialist out-patient clinics in accordance with the agreed job plan.
To work with consultant colleagues to deliver Blood Bank support in keeping with Better Blood Transfusion.
To promote clinical trials.
To work within guidelines to be established by the Speciality Group of the Birmingham Cancer Network.
To develop research interests within the Trust and with external partners.
To provide professional supervision, direction and training to junior medical staff and haematology laboratory staff in collaboration with the Head BMS, Pathology.
Participate in clinical audit.
Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
To attend meetings of the Directorate of Clinical Haematology and Oncology.
